The Path of Humility

Humility is not making yourself smaller. It is no longer being the center. Here is the path — five steps, each one a daily choice.

1. Recognize

Name the fruit without softening the word. Call it what it is. The first step out of darkness is admitting you are in it.

2. Confess

Before God, and where appropriate, before the person who was hurt. Confession is not explaining — it is owning.

3. Listen

Choose one or two people who are free to tell you the truth. Give them permission. Then listen without defending yourself.

4. Serve Unseen

Do the good that no one will notice. Serve where there is no applause. This is the gymnasium of humility.

5. Give Thanks

Gratitude is the daily cure for self-sufficiency. Every gift acknowledged is a reminder: I am not the source.

Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts. And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

— Psalm 139:23–24
